Shai Hope Appointed As West Indies T20 Captain

West Indies ODI captain Shai Hope has been appointed as the new T20 captain in place of all-rounder Rovman Powell. Powell had captained the West Indies T20 team since May 2023.

In the meantime, Test captain Kraigg Brathwaite has relinquished his captaincy after four years at the helm, taking over from Jason Holder. West Indies will host Australia for a series of Tests in June-July and will have a new captain announced prior to the start of the series.

"Brathwaite wanted to finish off the team negotiation phase before resigning. After that was done, he opted to quit. He feels that the team requires fresh leadership for the home series against Australia," West Indies Cricket Board said.

This series also means a lot to Brathwaite since he is merely two matches away from making his 100th Test appearance. He also wants to focus on batting without the pressures of leadership. Thanking the board for giving him an opportunity to develop the Test team, Brathwaite relinquishes the leadership, paving the way for the new captain. The board ensured that the new Test captain will be announced in the weeks ahead.
