CM Revanth Reddy Takes Strong Stand on HCA Controversy
Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy has reacted strongly to the ongoing dispute between the Hyderabad Cricket Association (HCA) and IPL franchise Sunrisers Hyderabad. The CM expressed deep anger over allegations that HCA President Jaganmohan Rao threatened the Sunrisers franchise during IPL matches. In response, he has ordered a vigilance inquiry into the matter.
On Monday, CM Reddy directed Vigilance DG Kothakota Srinivas Reddy to submit a detailed report on the alleged harassment of Sunrisers by the HCA president. The investigation will also cover the governance of the cricket association and challenges faced by Sunrisers Hyderabad.
Sunrisers' Complaint Sparks Controversy
A report published by Eenadu revealed that Sunrisers Hyderabad had written a letter stating they might leave Hyderabad due to blackmail over free passes. This revelation caused an uproar among cricket fans and political circles alike. Taking the issue seriously, CM Reddy warned that strict action would be taken against any HCA official, including President Jaganmohan Rao, if they were found guilty of harassment.
The CM made it clear that he would not tolerate any activities that could damage Hyderabad’s brand image. The Vigilance Department is now expected to conduct a comprehensive investigation into several key areas:
- HCA President's dealings with Sunrisers
- Ticket sales, purchases, and block sales
- Daily operations of the HCA
If any financial or team selection irregularities come to light, strict action will be taken against those responsible, regardless of their seniority in the association.
Conflict Over Stadium Modernization and Tickets
The dispute between HCA President Jaganmohan Rao and Sunrisers Hyderabad reportedly began in February 2024, during preparations for the IPL season. The issue escalated over the modernization of Uppal Stadium and the allocation of passes and tickets.
Key Issues Raised by Sunrisers Hyderabad
- Stadium Modernization: Sunrisers invested crores of rupees for stadium upgrades, including painting, corporate box repairs, and stand reconstruction. However, they objected to Jaganmohan Rao taking credit for the improvements in media interviews.
- Threat Allegations: Sunrisers accused Rao of threatening their staff, warning them that they "would not set foot in Hyderabad."
- Ticket Dispute:
- Sunrisers initially requested 3,900 tickets for sale in addition to the 3,900 complimentary passes given to the HCA.
- The franchise opposed selling all tickets to a single buyer, arguing it would be unfair to fans.
- After pressure from Rao, Sunrisers eventually agreed to release 2,000 tickets but insisted they be purchased from an official bank account to prevent bulk resales.
- HCA President did not respond to this request, leading to further tensions.
Sunrisers Accuse HCA President of Blackmail
In a series of emails sent to the HCA treasurer and Apex Council members, Sunrisers alleged that Jaganmohan Rao resorted to blackmail and threats during the IPL match against Lucknow Super Giants on March 27.
- The franchise praised HCA’s secretary, CEO, treasurer, and other members for their support. However, they blamed Rao alone for creating problems.
- Sunrisers accused Rao of pressuring them to buy tickets in bulk and locking the F-3 box assigned to Lucknow Super Giants owner Goenka until they provided 20 additional passes.
- The box remained locked until one hour before the match, causing major inconvenience.
- The franchise hinted that if the harassment continued, they would consult BCCI, Telangana Government, and their management about shifting to another venue.
Sunrisers Hyderabad emphasized that they had faced such issues only in the last two years under HCA’s leadership.
CM Reddy’s Response and Next Steps
CM Revanth Reddy has taken the Sunrisers' concerns seriously and assured that strict measures will be implemented to protect the interests of the franchise. With the Vigilance Department now involved, a detailed investigation is expected to reveal any misconduct within the HCA.
If found guilty, Jaganmohan Rao and other responsible officials will face strict legal action. The CM has reiterated that no one is above accountability, and protecting Hyderabad’s cricketing reputation remains a top priority.
