Tilak Varma Retires Out Against Lucknow Super Giants
Mumbai Indians' batsman Tilak Varma was only the fourth player in IPL history to retire out. During the game against Lucknow Super Giants, he made 24 runs off 23 balls. His inability to score at a fast pace compelled the team to introduce Mitchell Santner in his place. Mumbai required 24 runs off 7 balls at that time. They ultimately lost the game by 12 runs, scoring 191 while chasing 204.
Hardik Pandya Explains the Decision
Post the match, skipper Hardik Pandya described the thought process behind retiring Tilak.
"Things like this happen occasionally in cricket," Hardik said. "At that time, we required big-hitting. Things don't go as we desire all the time. Although we played aggressively early on, we couldn't end on a good note. Our batting didn't work today. We win and lose as a team. Nobody is responsible for it."
Pandya also accepted individual responsibility for the defeat.
"As captain, I accept the onus. Losing is painful. Frankly, we lost 15 more runs on this wicket, which also cost us."
On His Bowling and Team Strategy
Hardik also spoke about his five-wicket haul in the match.
I love my bowling. I don't worry about too many options. I just pay attention to reading the pitch and playing the correct balls. Dot balls make the batters play risk, and that gives opportunities.
He emphasized the need to adjust both while bowling and batting:
"We have to play clever. This tournament is too long. If we get some victories, we will get momentum back.
