Ricky Ponting Reflects On Advice To Rahul Dravid, Comments On Rohit And Virat's Careers

Ponting Recalls Crucial Talk With Dravid During Challenging Phase

During India's 2007-08 tour of Australia, former India captain Rahul Dravid was nearing the end of his Test career. He had managed just 237 runs in four matches, averaging 33.85. Despite being rivals on the field, former Australia skipper Ricky Ponting revealed he shared a motivational conversation with Dravid at that time.

“Rahul was going through a tough phase, both in terms of form and external pressure. We both played at number three for our sides, and I felt compelled to speak with him,” Ponting recalled. “I told him, ‘Block out the noise. Trust your ability. You’re a great player. Just stay focused on the game.’”

Ponting added that Dravid responded positively and ended his career on his own terms. Interestingly, he shared that Dravid later returned the favor. “He was the first one to call and encourage me when I was going through a similar phase,” Ponting said.

Ponting on Kohli and Rohit: ‘They Still Have More to Offer’

Commenting on current Indian stars Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, Ponting highlighted the resilience and ongoing ambition of elite athletes.

“You can never discount players of high quality,” Ponting noted. “That’s what makes them great. Kohli has faced challenges in recent years but remains a world-class cricketer. Rohit is equally significant. Though Test cricket is becoming tougher for both, Kohli is still the best limited-overs player I’ve seen.”

Ponting emphasized that he wouldn’t deliver the same message to Rohit and Virat that he once gave Dravid. “They’re not done yet. Both still aim to contribute at the international level. While the IPL is different, my hope is to see them continue representing India,” he concluded.
