Sunrisers Hyderabad's perennial travails in the IPL 2025 campaign have elicited the wrath of ex-Indian player Ambati Rayudu. Following their fourth consecutive defeat, SRH's bowling unit has been under fire, notably for failing to contribute to the make-or-break middle overs. Rayudu mentioned the lack of the team's ability to pick up wickets when it is required, hinting defensive planning by themselves would not do the trick in a high-pressure competition like the IPL.
Following a promising start to the season, SRH has hit rock bottom in the points table. Their recent defeat to Gujarat Titans exposed both batting inconsistency and bowling inefficacy, again indicating concerns about the overall strategy and operations of the team.
SRH's Performance Deteriorates After Solid Start
Sunrisers Hyderabad started their IPL 2025 season on a promising note, but their rhythm soon fizzled out. The team has now faced four consecutive back-to-back losses, falling to the lowest of the league standings. Their last defeat came against Gujarat Titans, who chased down a target of 153 runs with relative ease. In spite of early dismissal of Sai Sudharsan and Jos Buttler, Hyderabad bowlers couldn't capitalize. Shubman Gill led the Gujarat innings with a composed 61* off 43 balls, while Rutherford provided good support to wrap up the game in just 16.4 overs.
This loss followed the same outcomes against Kolkata Knight Riders, Delhi Capitals, and Lucknow Super Giants. In all those matches, Hyderabad's bowling department was unable to maintain pressure or take wickets at opportune moments. Their inability to pick up momentum from the early overs has exposed a crucial flaw that has enabled opposition sides to mount a comeback and chase targets comfortably. The habitual inability to defend paltry totals has become a regular talking point of SRH's campaign.
Middle Overs Remain SRH Weakness
One of the biggest problems for Sunrisers Hyderabad has been that they lack wicket-taking bowlers in the middle overs. Although they have managed to demonstrate some promise during the powerplay, they have not been able to persist with the pressure throughout the crucial middle phase of innings. This has provided opposition batsmen an opportunity to recover and pick up speed in the back half of the innings. Former cricketer Ambati Rayudu has pinpointed this weakness, noting that SRH lacks bowlers who can cause runstheirbreaks again and again in these overs.
According to Rayudu, this is not just a matter of the individual performance, but a lack in the team's bowling strategy as a whole. Whereas Gujarat Titans used bowlers like Rashid Khan, Sai Kishore, and Prasidh Krishna to great effect in shocking their rivals, SRH bowlers appeared to be more interested in containment rather than taking wickets. Rayudu criticized such an approach, stating that a defensive approach lacking breakthrough potential will not pay dividends in a contest as competitive as the IPL.
Tactical Changes Needed to Rejuvenate SRH
To revive their campaign, Sunrisers Hyderabad might have to explore modifying their current bowling units and plans. Failing to be threatening with their middle-over bowling has been an issue for long, which has resulted in match-winning partnerships for their opponents. Having players who can not only stop but also put pressure by picking up wickets could be instrumental in providing improved performances in future matches.
Also, the team management could be forced to redo the balance of bat and ball. As much as the top order has been inconsistent, the inability of the bowling department to defend modest or mid-strength totals has added to the weaknesses of SRH. Given that there are still several games left in the league stage, strategic changes and improved execution would be the game-changer for Hyderabad to gain competitiveness in IPL 2025 season.
