Umpires Examine Bats on the Field
During IPL 2025, umpires have started to check bats in the field in a new development. The move is intended to ensure that players stick to equipment rules and are not given a head start over their opponents in matches.
Inspections Were Hitherto Done in Dressing Rooms
Previously, bat checks were done only in the dressing rooms before matches. But from this season, the BCCI has given permission to umpires to check the pitch using a device that looks like a small house.
Which Players Have Been Checked So Far?
So far, Hardik Pandya's, Shimron Hetmyer's, and Phil Salt's bats have been checked. All three bats were within the legal limit and passed the check.
What Are the Bat Size Regulations?
According to official cricket rules:
- The bat face must not exceed 4.25 inches
- The spine (middle section) must not exceed 2.64 inches
- The brim must be below 1.56 inches
- The total length of the bat, from handle top to toe, must not exceed 38 inches
Why These Regulations Are Important
Even an increase in thickness by a bat can boost the performance of a player by leaps and bounds. A thicker bat can make mistimed shots fly into the stands. IPL batsmen alone have hit 525 sixes so far this season. Interestingly, Nicholas Pooran alone has hit 31 sixes.
