Pant's Bowling Decisions Criticized After CSK's Thriller Win Against Lucknow

Ravi Bishnoi Missed His Decisive Overs as CSK Wins the Match

In a tightly contested IPL match played on Monday, the Chennai Super Kings bested the Lucknow Super Giants in an edge-of-the-seat thriller. The course of the match left several eyebrows raised regarding the captaincy moves of Rishabh Pant, particularly with respect to how he has been managing the bowling attack when it comes to the final overs.

Strategic Mistakes in Bowling Decision-Making

At the end of the game, Chennai required 44 runs from the final four overs. Lucknow's captain, Rishabh Pant, chose to use pacers Shardul Thakur and Avesh Khan to bowl. Although leg-spinner Ravi Bishnoi also bowled well, giving only 18 runs in three overs and picking up two wickets, Pant did not request him to bowl in the death overs.

Cricket experts have identified this as a big strategic error. Bishnoi was playing well in touch and had also performed well previously in the match, and Dhoni has been underperforming against spin in the recent past. This change, perhaps due to inexperience and nervousness, enabled MS Dhoni and Shivam Dube to take control and lead Chennai to victory.

Similarities with Other Matches and Missed Opportunities

In a previous fixture between Kolkata Knight Riders and Chennai Super Kings, Sunil Narine dismissed Dhoni for just one run using spin—a scenario some experts feel Pant failed to learn from. In contrast, Pant opted for pace over spin during the crucial overs, even though spin might have been a more effective strategy.

Ravi Bishnoi’s Reaction Post-Match

Post the game, Ravi Bishnoi expressed the missed opportunity. "I never asked for the chance to bowl the death overs, but I did have two trips down the pitch waiting for the captain's thought. That did not work. I thought Pant might have had some other game plan," said Bishnoi. He also recognized Dhoni commandeering when it is convenient for him, with the lines: "If the ball is in his zone, he can do anything."
