Cricket Returns to the Olympics After 128 Years
At the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, cricket will return to the games after an 128-year hiatus. Its previous big appearance was during the 1900 Paris Olympics when Great Britain won the gold medal. In 2028 next year, England, famously recognized as the place of cricket's origins, will have a second chance at the apple — albeit as part of the usual Great Britain team with Scotland.
Scotland to Join England on Unified British Team
England and Scotland, who have since time immemorial competed as two separate teams in ICC tournaments, will unite under a single body to represent the Olympics. This has been confirmed by Trady Lindblad, the CEO of Cricket Scotland. Both nations' athletes will compete under the British Olympic Association in Los Angeles.
Official Confirmation from Cricket Scotland
We get on very well with the England and Wales Cricket Board. Already, our proposals to play as Team Great Britain have been put to them. We're keen to play all together under the British Olympic Association banner. We're looking forward to that opportunity, and the team selection will be later on," Lindblad said.
Tournament Details: Format and Dates
The Los Angeles Olympics will be from June 14 to July 30, 2028. The International Olympic Committee has agreed upon cricket as an event, with six countries participating in men and women's tournaments. All the matches will be of the T20 format, and each team needs a 15-member squad.
Top Teams and Global Interest
India currently leads the international cricket ratings, with Australia and England following closely. As global focus is on the return of cricket to the Olympics, inclusion of leading teams will only add to the competitive quality of the tournament.
