CSK’s Playoff Hopes in IPL 2025
Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have a difficult journey ahead in IPL 2025. With just two victories from nine games, their prospects of reaching the playoffs appear remote. Even if CSK wins all the remaining five matches, it may still not be sufficient. But the larger question is how their performance will affect the position of other teams.
Former CSK star Suresh Raina shared his thoughts, mentioning that CSK lagged in choosing the right players during the mega auction. He emphasized that while MS Dhoni’s presence is important, the team’s success depends on how well the other players perform. Raina also highlighted that Dhoni does not take part in the auction process.
Suresh Raina on Dhoni’s Auction Involvement
Raina explained,
"Kashi sir has over 30 years of experience managing the team. Rupa madam knows the ins and outs of cricket operations, including buying players and managing the squad. Yet, it feels like the selections made this time were not right. Many wonder why this happened even with Dhoni’s presence. To clarify, Dhoni has never been part of the auction process. I, too, have not attended such discussions. Dhoni usually suggests four or five names to retain but does not participate in bidding at the auction."
Raina also spoke about the performance of the team,
"If Dhoni, aged 43 and joining the season as an uncapped player, is struggling, then what are the others doing? Some players were purchased for ₹18 crores, ₹17 crores, and ₹12 crores. When provided with such faith and chances, it's the duty to perform. Sadly, the same errors are being made."
Coach Stephen Fleming's Point of View
CSK coach Stephen Fleming acknowledged the season's woes,
"It is difficult to talk about these losses. We tried with the best possible team and played our game. It is very important to build a strong side during the auction. Currently, other sides are slightly ahead of us. Injuries and lack of form among players also impacted our performances. Each member of the team, be it top order or tailenders, will have to accept responsibility."
Rayudu Calls the Season a Learning Phase
Former CSK player Ambati Rayudu likened the ongoing season to a test run,
"This season hasn't been great for CSK. Nonetheless, it's a good opportunity to learn and rebuild. MS Dhoni is expected to contribute to shaping the team for the next season. Young players like Dewald Brevis and Ayush Mhatre have also looked promising and can be vital in the future. It's now time to develop a stronger personality within the team."
