India's Ambition to Host the Olympics
The International Olympic Committee has received an official letter by India, and the country stated its interest to host the Olympics in 2036. India proposed Ahmedabad as the primary location for games. However, upon selection, India had plans to allot sports-related events across many cities in a countrywide distributed model, given the existing sporting infrastructure. Then, the entire city of Ahmedabad would have a sports village that would handle athletes and their officials.
Utilizing Available Sports Infrastructure
India's strategy is to utilize the maximum of its available sports infrastructure. The idea is to save on the construction cost and to highlight the varied sporting arenas in the country. For example:
- Hockey Events: Odisha, as India's hockey capital, is suggested to host hockey events.
- Rowing Events: Bhopal will host rowing events.
- Canoeing and Kayaking: Pune has been shortlisted as the venue for canoeing and kayaking events.
It actually fits the profile of an IOC-approved proposal as far back as 2014, which can be held on different cities so that the economic burden on one city is diluted.
Cricket and Other Main Events
Cricket, the sport most associated with India, is also being considered as an Olympic sport. Ahmedabad, Mumbai, and Delhi will be the potential venues for cricket matches. The Sports Complex in Ahmedabad will lead the way for indoor sports like badminton and wrestling, as it has the latest facilities that can accommodate many events at one time.
India's Experience in Hosting Global Events
It had last organized the major multi-sport event way back in the 2010 Commonwealth Games. The experience then will allow it to showcase its comprehensive, coherent plan for IOC, making evident its preparation and ability to hold an event that is Olympian in scope and scale.
The Competition for Hosting Rights to the 2036 Games
India faces stiff competition from other nations vying for the 2036 Olympics, including Mexico, Indonesia, Turkey, Poland, Egypt, and South Korea. Meanwhile, Los Angeles is set to host the 2028 Olympics, followed by Brisbane in 2032.
A Vision for Global Recognition
India hosting the 2036 Olympics will be a milestone in history because it will secure its position as a player in the international sporting arena. Under the multi-city hosting model, India is able to showcase diverse culture and infrastructure, making it a memorable Olympic experience while not being too pricey.
