PM Modi: AI To Create New Jobs, Not Replace Them

Technology for All, People at the Centre

Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized the democratization of technology, making it in public interest. In his address at the Paris Artificial Intelligence Action Summit, co-hosted by French President Emmanuel Macron, Modi emphasized international cooperation in developing transparent and trustworthy AI systems. He emphasized that AI needs to be prejudice-free and developed to benefit local ecosystems, counter cybersecurity attacks, misinformation, and deep fakes.

Global Governance and AI Standards

Modi called for international cooperation to establish governance models and standards on the basis of shared values. He stated, "Governance is not about protecting from threats and opponents; it's also about spurring innovation and putting it to good use for society." He emphasized developing quality, prejudice-free data and making technology useful and accessible to local people.

India Keen to Drive AI Initiatives

Emphasizing India's keenness to drive AI initiatives, Modi invited the next AI Action Summit to be organized in India. He also welcomed the establishment of an AI Foundation and a Council for Sustainable AI to ensure technological advancement reaches everyone and is inclusive across the world.

Innovation Has to Benefit All

Modi emphasized inclusive innovation and governance, especially for Global South nations. These nations typically lack data, talent, and capital access. He stated, "We have to make certain that governance is within reach of everyone, especially those with limited capabilities."

AI's Potential in Healthcare, Education, and Agriculture

Emphasizing AI's potential to transform, Modi highlighted its capacity to enhance lives across industries such as healthcare, education, and agriculture. He spoke about how AI can make medical prescriptions simpler in local languages and help advance Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) across the world.

AI Will Transform, Not Replace Jobs

Responding to fears over AI replacing jobs, Modi brushed them aside, citing that technology earlier transformed work and not replaced it. New categories of jobs will be created as AI continues to evolve, transforming the nature of work but not decreasing employment in totality.

Creating AI for the Public Good

Modi emphasized India's determination to create AI applications for the public good. He emphasized investing in skill and reskilling for a future in which AI would be the dominant force, and everyone should reap the benefits of technological advancements.

Strengthening India-France Relations

French President Emmanuel Macron hosted Modi for dinner at Paris, symbolizing the close chemistry between the two leaders. Modi, warmly welcomed to the Elysee Palace, was overjoyed to see his "friend" Macron.

India's Emerging AI Capability

Modi emphasized India's massive talent pool in AI and the creation of the world's largest language model indicating the country's diversity. He mentioned India's successful use of digital public infrastructure to 1.4 billion citizens and establishing public-private partnerships offering inexpensive computational capacity to start-ups and researchers.
