
The Supreme Court has acknowledged the absence of specific legislation regulating online media like YouTube, citing concerns about the unbridled nature of content produced by YouTubers.
Regulatory Concerns over YouTube Content
On Tuesday, a bench of Justice Suryakant and Justice N. Kotishwar Singh emphasized action being taken against YouTube shows that are being telecast without supervision. "YouTubers are making shows according to their will. Measures need to be taken in this regard, and we will do so," the bench asserted.
Case Against Ranveer Allahbadia
Referring to podcaster Ranveer Allahbadia, whom the Indian podcaster had accused of issuing defamatory remarks about the Indian family system, a notice was served, Justice Suryakant asserted. "We want to take necessary action as this is a highly sensitive matter. Ignoring it is not an option," he asserted.
Government’s Role in Regulation
The Supreme Court called upon Solicitor General Tushar Mehta and Attorney General R. Venkataramani to assist in the continuation of legal processes. The court also noted central government cooperation as the most important factor in surmounting these regulatory challenges. Handling Inappropriate Content The bench referred to issues of objectionable remarks on YouTube by Ranveer Allahbadia, stating, "His remarks reflect a negative frame of mind, which he put on the site without hesitation." The judges also added that the content highlights the need for greater regulation of digital platforms.
