West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee criticized the management of Mahakumbh, calling it a "Mrityukumbh" because of stampede accidents. She also accused authorities of hiding the true number of deaths.
"Over a hundred bodies were hidden to hide the casualty figure. Mahakumbh has become a 'Mrityukumbh' during the BJP regime," Banerjee said in the Assembly on Tuesday. She accused the government of Uttar Pradesh of failing to make the necessary arrangements for the event and solely focusing on publicity.
It was reported that 30 individuals died in a stampede during the Mahakumbh Mela last month, and another mishap at Delhi railway station, in which pilgrims were heading to Prayagraj, claimed the lives of 18 individuals.
Complaint to Modi
Mamata Banerjee rebutted BJP MLAs' charge that she had connections with Bangladesh terrorists. She challenged them to produce tangible evidence to substantiate the charges and said she would resign if guilty. She threatened to go directly to Prime Minister Narendra Modi if such unfounded charges persisted.
Accusing the BJP of politicizing religion, Banerjee also denounced disinformation about her having a relationship with the Muslim League.
'Shameful' US Action
Banerjee condemned the US for deporting illegal Indian immigrants in handcuffs to India, terming the action shameful. She called on the central government to organize special flights to deport these people from the US.
