New Government Takes Charge in Delhi

Delhi has a new government as Rekha Gupta took the oath as Chief Minister in a grand ceremony at Ramlila Maidan on Thursday afternoon. Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena administered the oath, marking a historic moment for the BJP, which returned to power in the national capital after 26 years.

The event saw the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, several Union ministers, chief ministers from NDA-ruled states, and senior BJP leaders. Notably, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu and Deputy CM Pawan Kalyan also attended.

Massive Security Arrangements at the Oath-Taking Ceremony

Rekha Gupta, before heading to the venue, offered prayers at the Hanuman temple. Upon arrival at Ramlila Maidan, she greeted the audience, which included saints, political leaders, and celebrities. In light of the high-profile nature of the event, authorities deployed 25,000 security personnel to ensure safety.

Alongside Rekha Gupta, several BJP leaders took the oath as ministers, including:

  • Ashish Sood
  • Majinder Singh Sirsa
  • Ravinder Indraj Singh
  • Kapil Mishra
  • Pankaj Kumar

Following her swearing-in, Rekha Gupta was granted Z category security as the new Chief Minister.

Rekha Gupta’s Background and Political Journey

Born on July 19, 1974, in Jhulan, Haryana, Rekha Gupta pursued a B.Com from Daulat Ram College, Delhi University. Her political journey began in 1992 when she joined ABVP. She served as the Secretary of Delhi University Students' Union (1995-96) and later as its President (1996-97).

She earned a law degree from Chaudhary Charan Singh University in Meerut and practiced law for some time. In 1998, she married Manish Gupta. Her political career saw a significant rise when she won the Uttar Pithampur Municipal Councilor seat in 2007. She later became the mayor of the South Delhi Municipal Corporation.

Her Role in BJP and RSS

Rekha Gupta maintains close ties with the RSS and has actively participated in the Sangh’s women-centric programs. She currently holds the position of National Vice President of BJP Mahila Morcha and serves as a member of the BJP’s National Executive.

With her swearing-in, Rekha Gupta becomes the 5th woman from the BJP to serve as Chief Minister, following Sushma Swaraj, Uma Bharti, Vasundhara Raje, and Anandiben Patel. Additionally, she is the 18th woman in India to assume the Chief Minister’s office from various political parties.
