In the inaugural function of the 98th All India Marathi Sahitya Sammelan, PM Modi addressed the importance of Marathi cinema. In particular, he referred to Chhaava by saying that Mumbai and Maharashtra contributed significantly to Hindi and Marathi cinema. He attributed the act of bringing to the screen the life history of Shambhaji Maharaj to Shivaji Sawant's Marathi novel.

Vicky Kaushal is in the main role, with Rashmika Mandanna playing the role of Yesubai, the wife of Shambhaji. Akshaye Khanna played the role of Aurangzeb, a powerful character in the story.
