The 18th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL 2025) will start in 18 days, keeping cricket fever burning just after the end of the Champions Trophy. Two-time defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) are preparing for the new season with a new jersey and new leadership. The franchise has officially declared Ajinkya Rahane as their new captain, and young talent Venkatesh Iyer has been made the vice-captain. The news was shared on KKR's official 'X' account on Monday.
KKR's Shocking Captaincy Choice
KKR management took a very bold step in not keeping Shreyas Iyer, the captain who led the team to their last IPL title. He was also ignored in the mega auction. But the franchise pumped a lot of money into Venkatesh Iyer and also recruited veteran batter Ajinkya Rahane. Right from the start, rumors were plenty that one among them would be handed the leadership role. Just as expected, the management settled for the more experienced player.
With this announcement, captains for all IPL franchises except Delhi Capitals have been finalized. It is reported that Delhi may appoint either KL Rahul or Axar Patel as their captain for IPL 2025.
KKR Reveals New Jersey for IPL 2025
Along with the change of leadership, KKR also unveiled their new jersey for the new season. The new jersey includes three stars, representing the franchise's three IPL titles. A special video was posted on social media to commemorate the launch.
"The three stars signify our championship wins on May 27, 2012, June 1, 2014, and May 26, 2024—all achieved during the Gemini zodiac phase.". The new title has returned us to the top, and we intend to take the same energy with us this season. We have titled these titles Karbo, Lorbo, and Jeetbo—Bengali terms for performance, struggle, and victory. This is not only our intention but our motivation to keep the legacy of champions going," said Binda De, Chief Marketing Officer of KKR.
What's Next for KKR?
With a new jersey, vice-captain, and captain, KKR will be defending its title in IPL 2025. Fans are waiting with bated breath for their first match as the team looks to win a fourth championship.
