Donald Trump Announces Tariffs On India And China Starting April 2

Trump Addresses Congress for the First Time

Donald Trump, in his first joint session address to Congress after taking office as the US President, highlighted his administration’s early achievements. He claimed to have accomplished more in the first 43 days than many achieve in four or eight years. Calling it just the beginning, Trump also addressed the issue of tariffs, declaring that retaliatory tariffs on multiple countries, including India and China, will take effect from April 2.

Retaliatory Tariffs to be Imposed

Trump emphasized that several nations have been imposing tariffs on the US for decades. He stated that the time had come for the US to respond. "Countries like the European Union, China, Brazil, and India impose high tariffs on us. India, for example, has auto tariffs exceeding 100%. America has not been treated fairly under the current system. Therefore, starting April 2, we will impose retaliatory tariffs on these nations, matching their imposed amounts. This will strengthen America’s economy and restore its greatness," he said. Trump jokingly mentioned that he considered implementing the tariffs from April 1 but avoided it to prevent association with April Fool’s Day.

100 Executive Orders Signed in Six Weeks

Trump declared that freedom of expression had returned to America under his leadership. He revealed that since taking office on January 20, he had signed 100 executive orders and taken 400 additional executive actions. "My election victory was historic, unseen in decades. The old days are back for America. There is no need to wake up anymore," Trump remarked.

Elon Musk Receives Praise

Elon Musk, the chairman of DoJ and a global business magnate, attended the address at Capitol Hill. Trump acknowledged Musk’s efforts, stating, "We created the DoJ with great intentions. Musk, as chairman, is doing an exceptional job," prompting a standing ovation from Republican members.

Melania Trump's Contribution Recognized

First Lady Melania Trump also attended the event. Trump praised her work in pushing for a bill limiting online pornography. He thanked the Senate for the passage of the bill, resulting in applause and a standing ovation from the crowd.
