Gabba Stadium To Be Demolished After 2032 Olympics, Cricket To Relocate

Queensland Government Confirms Gabba’s Future

The iconic Gabba cricket stadium will be demolished following the 2032 Summer Olympics, as announced by the Queensland government. Cricket matches will be relocated to a new 60,000-capacity stadium under construction in Victoria Park, Brisbane, which is set to host Olympic events.

Change in Redevelopment Plans

Queensland Premier David Crisafulli revealed the revised Olympic infrastructure plans on Tuesday. Initially, officials considered demolishing and rebuilding the Gabba Stadium for the event. However, escalating costs led to the cancellation of the proposal.

“Queensland aims to introduce a world-class stadium. The Gabba has served well, but it is not being adequately maintained. Hosting a major sporting event requires top-tier facilities. The choice is between spending billions on temporary structures or ensuring a lasting cricket legacy with a new stadium,” Crisafulli explained.

Cricket’s Return to the Olympics

Cricket has only featured once at the World Games in 1990. However, the sport is set to return at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, marking a historic comeback.
