India is going all out to host the 2036 Olympics, and the Union Ministry of Sports is in the process of planning land distribution for the Olympics. It has been reported that land from the Asaram Bapu Ashram, the founder of which was found guilty in a case of rape, could be utilized for Olympic facilities. National media outlets have raised this prospect.
Planned Olympic Facilities Around Narendra Modi Stadium
The Sports Ministry is looking at handing over land for the major Olympic facilities, including:
- Sardar Patel Sports Enclave
- Olympic Village
- Other sports fields
These centres are likely to be constructed around the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. In order to create space for this, Asaram Bapu's Ashrams, as well as Bharatiya Seva Samajam and Sadashiv Prajna Mandal Ashrams, are likely to be shifted. The arrangements will be made by a three-member committee headed by the Ahmedabad Municipal Commissioner in collaboration with local bodies.
Land Acquisition and Master Plan Development
A master plan for the 2036 Olympics will be prepared by an international consultant, in partnership with the Ahmedabad Urban Development Authority (AUDA). Reports indicate that property for about 650 acres would be bought to construct sporting facilities and supporting infrastructure. Residential complexes such as Shivnagar and Vanjaravas, close to the stadium, could also be bought for the event.
The Gujarat Chief Minister, Bhupendra Patel, and the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation Committee have given the nod to the collector's office to supervise the land acquisition process. Further updates on this are likely to come as India continues with its Olympic preparations.
