NASA Announces ₹25 Crore Reward For Ideas On Recyling Moon Waste

NASA announced a new mission to tackle one of the oft-neglected concerns of its lunar missions: human waste abandoned on the moon. In a challenge called "Lunar Cycle Challenge," NASA is calling out scientists, engineers, and thinkers from around the globe to offer suggestions on ways to recycle such waste into viable resources. Top suggestions can get as much as $3 million (about ₹25 crore).

History of Lunar Waste Problem

Between 1969 and 1972, NASA's Apollo program flew astronauts to the moon for scientific study. During the six successful moon landings, astronauts brought back samples of lunar material and performed experiments. Because of a lack of storage space on the Lunar Module, they jettisoned non-essential materials including human excrement. It has now emerged that 96 bags of human waste are still on the surface of the moon.
