BYD Introduces Ultra-Fast EV Charging System: Full Charge In 5-8 Minutes

BYD, one of China's top vehicle and battery makers, has launched a sophisticated 1 MW flash charging system that can charge an electric vehicle (EV) battery to full capacity in 5 to 8 minutes — equivalent to filling up a petrol or diesel car.

Major Features of BYD's Flash Charger

  • The new charging system takes advantage of enhanced battery and fuel storage technologies.
  • Within 5 minutes, the charger can achieve a driving range of 400 km.
  • In order to spread this technology, BYD is launching more than 4,000 new charging points in China.

After the announcement by BYD, Tesla's shares in the US market declined by 5.60%.

EV Sales Growth in China

The take-up of EVs has been hindered by long charging time and restricted driving range. Yet, by solving these problems, China recorded a 40% increase in the sale of electric and hybrid cars last year. With the introduction of BYD's flash chargers, EV take-up will speed up even more.

Innovative Technology Behind BYD's Charging System

BYD's flash charging system features:

  • Silicon carbide power chips for improved efficiency.
  • A battery pack that can run as short as 1500 volts.

The Blade Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) battery of the company has been hailed as one of the safest and most efficient EV batteries by experts.
