Spam and cheating calls could be a thing of the past in the near future. A new caller ID feature will show the name of the caller directly on your phone's screen without having to rely on third-party applications such as Truecaller. Major telecom operators—Jio, Airtel, and Vodafone Idea—are gearing up to launch the feature. Telecom operators are reportedly teaming up with top technology suppliers such as HP, Dell, Ericsson, and Nokia to procure the servers and software needed.
Government Urge for Implementation of Caller ID
The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) initially recommended this feature last February. Recently, the central government instructed telecom operators to introduce caller ID services at a rapid pace to tackle rising instances of online fraud and unwanted calls. Telecom operators are now in the process of rolling out the necessary technology.

How Caller ID Will Function
Currently, most users make use of applications such as Truecaller to get information about unidentified callers. When this new functionality is available, telecom networks will show the name of the caller directly. Still, during the first phase, caller identification will be available within the same telecommunication network only. For instance, a user of Jio will receive caller ID only from another Jio user.
In order to function across the networks, mobile operators have to be permitted to exchange data of customers. Also, owing to hardware and software limitations, this service might be unavailable on feature phones.
The above initiative will enhance security, reduce spam calls, and advance customer experience in mobile communication.
