The Indian government is planning to introduce a new ride-hailing app to rival private players such as Ola and Uber. Union Cooperation Minister Amit Shah said the initiative, Sahkar Taxi, will operate on a cooperative system where registered drivers would get direct benefits.
Sahkar Taxi will comprise two-wheelers, autos, and four-wheelers that will provide a comparable service model to existing ride-hailing portals. Unlike companies, the earnings and profits will be shared among drivers rather than a corporate entity. Amit Shah confirmed that Sahkar Taxi services will be launched in the next few months.
Comparable Government Initiatives Statewise
West Bengal has already introduced a government-sponsored ride service named Yatri Saathi, which was first launched in Kolkata and then rolled out in Siliguri, Asansol, and Durgapur. Auto and cab unions in Karnataka have joined hands to create the Namma Yatri app, with the profit going directly to drivers. Sahkar Taxi is likely to follow the same model, offering a substitute for Ola, Uber, and Rapido while financially benefiting drivers.
