Bill Gates: Three Jobs That Will Defy AI Disruption

The advent of artificial intelligence (AI) has sparked the specter of job disappearance, but business executives maintain that AI will enable new avenues of opportunity. Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates recently addressed the phenomenon, admitting that AI will render most jobs extinct. But Gates specified three jobs where there is less chance of automation: coding, energy management, and biology. AI still hasn't been able to compete with problem-solving skill, imagination, and adaptability—abilities that take central importance in these areas, Gates said.

Coding: The Road to Developing AI

While people fretted about AI taking over code-writing, Gates made it clear that human coders remain indispensable. Though AI can write code, it is not accurate, lacks sense of accuracy, logic and problem-solving—abilities required to build sophisticated software. AI programs such as ChatGPT can help write code, but coders have to debug and enhance AI-generated code. Coders must also resolve unexpected issues AI is incapable of solving independently.

Energy Sector: Human Judgment Needed

Gates pointed out that AI is not yet capable of overcoming human intellect in the energy sector. Human judgment needs to be applied to strategic decision-making, renewable energy, and emergency response, such as power failure and resource deficiency. Energy professionals, unlike AI, can improvise in an evolving situation with ethics and the environment in mind.

Biology: AI Supports, But Doesn’t Replace Experts

AI is able to process large amounts of data and can be used in the diagnosis of illnesses, but Gates noted that biologists are yet to be replaced. Medical science, reason, and creativity rely on some sort of creativity and expertise that has not been replicated by AI yet. Gates noted that although AI improves research, human-driven discoveries cannot be replaced in medicine and biology by AI.

AI and the Future of Work

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi also commented on the impact of AI, saying that while AI will transform how people live and work, new employment opportunities will emerge. He emphasized skilling and reskilling to stay ahead in an AI world.

Gates' remarks reiterate the fact that while AI is transforming companies, human skills in fundamental industries remain non-replaceable.
