Modi-Trump: Trump Praises Modi As A Great Prime Minister

Trump Calls Modi an Intelligent Leader and a Good Friend

US President Donald Trump made significant comments regarding Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He called Modi a very intelligent leader and a good friend. These words of praise were uttered in reply to a question by a reporter on Friday.

"Modi came to the United States recently. He is a very intelligent individual, and we have a great friendship. Our meetings were fruitful and good for both countries," Trump said.

Trump Speaks of Tariffs in India-US Trade Relations

In reference to India's economic policies, Trump recognized his good relationship with the nation but raised issues regarding trade tariffs.

"You (meaning the people of India) have a very good Prime Minister. I have very good relations with India. My only problem with India is tariffs. India has some of the highest tariffs anywhere in the world. I hope they will reduce these tariffs very substantially. But, from April 2 onwards, if India keeps putting tariffs on our imports, I will put equally high tariffs on theirs," Trump threatened.

Major Points Discussed Between Modi and Trump

When Modi recently visited the US, both the leaders had key meetings, which centered on tariffs, immigration laws, and strategic alliances. Trump expressed clearly that America would not be providing tariff exemptions, underlining the need for fairness in trade practices. The two nations also agreed to have a trade deal that would prove advantageous for both economies.

India's Tough Stand on Tariff Negotiations

India has stood firm in trade talks with the US. Though it has committed to reducing tariffs on some items, the government is concerned about national interests.

India is willing to reduce tariffs on farm imports such as walnuts, apples, and almonds, a top official disclosed recently. However, with the prevailing situation in the agricultural sector, India will not provide concessions on strategic products such as wheat and corn.
