Giant Earthquakes Ravage Myanmar and Thailand
Two strong earthquakes hit Thailand and Myanmar on Friday and resulted in extensive damage. The number of deaths is on the rise, standing at over 700 as rescue efforts continue. At least 694 individuals have died in Myanmar, confirmed by the nation's military officials. In Bangkok, the capital city of Thailand, there have been 10 reported deaths. Further, around 100 workers who were constructing buildings are missing after one of the structures collapsed.
Authorities say at least 1,670 people have been injured in both nations. The U.S. Geological Survey has cautioned that the death toll may exceed 10,000 as the extent of the destruction becomes clearer.
Another Aftershock Strikes Myanmar
In the midst of continued efforts at recovery, Myanmar was shaken once again. A 4.2-magnitude earthquake hit just after midnight on Friday, officials reported. Rescue workers continue to labor in the affected areas, looking for survivors and helping those in need.
Global Aid Efforts Underway
Global aid is flooding in for Myanmar and Thailand. India has sent 15 tons of relief items under 'Operation Brahma,' such as tents, blankets, sleeping bags, generators, and packets of food. Support has also been pledged from the United States, Indonesia, and China. United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has confirmed that relief supplies are being shipped to the affected areas.
Extensive Damage Throughout Both Countries
The back-to-back quakes hit Myanmar on Friday afternoon, causing strong tremors in neighboring Thailand, especially in Bangkok. The devastation was extensive, with hundreds of big buildings collapsing, including religious buildings and monasteries. Hundreds of people are still trapped under the rubble, necessitating immediate rescue efforts.
Myanmar and Thailand have both issued states of emergency in some of the affected regions, deploying resources to help survivors and evaluate the damage.
