The United States is preparing to impose retaliatory tariffs on key trading partners, including India. President Donald Trump is set to announce the final decision on this matter on April 2. He has already clarified that no country will be exempt from these measures. White House Press Secretary Carolyn Leavitt recently addressed the media, highlighting the issue. She stated that India imposes 100% tariffs on American products, making it increasingly difficult for U.S. exports to enter foreign markets. She emphasized that now is the right time for the U.S. to respond with countermeasures.
High Tariffs on U.S. Goods
Leavitt presented a list of countries imposing the highest tariffs on American products. She pointed out that unfair trade policies have disadvantaged the U.S. for a long time. According to her:
- European Union imposes 50% tariffs on American dairy products.
- Japan charges 700% tariffs on U.S. rice.
- India levies 100% tariffs on American agricultural goods.
- Canada imposes 300% tariffs on U.S. butter and cheese.
She explained that these high tariffs create significant barriers for American businesses, preventing them from competing fairly in international markets. She stressed that retaliatory tariffs are necessary to protect U.S. economic interests.
Historic Trade Policy Shift
Leavitt stated that President Trump is introducing major changes in trade policies to benefit the American people. The administration will implement these changes starting Wednesday, April 2. Previously, Trump also commented on this issue, calling the new policy a "game changer" for the country.
Global Retaliatory Tariffs
Trump made it clear that retaliatory tariffs will apply globally. He criticized other nations for taking advantage of the U.S. economy for decades, stating that even America's allies have engaged in unfair trade practices. He emphasized that the new tariffs imposed by the U.S. will be much lower than what other countries have historically imposed on American goods.
