Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu on Tuesday announced the state government's plan to develop seven new airports to enhance regional connectivity. The CM explained the progress and future plans on these projects during a review meeting with Civil Aviation Minister Rammohan Naidu and Airports Authority officials at his residence in Undavalli.

Proposed locations for new airports

In airports planned in Kuppam, Dagadarthi, Srikakulam, Tadepalligudem, Nagarjunasagar, Tuni-Annavaram and Ongole. Some details for highlights.

  • Srikakulam Airport: The government claims feasibility studies for Srikakulam are completed and has scheduled it for two-phase development, 1,383 acres land of which would be taken by land acquisition.
  • Dagadarthi Airport: This airport was planned during the previous TDP government. It requires 1,379 acres. While 635 acres have been acquired, efforts are on to complete land acquisition and start construction. BPCL's planned oil refinery in the area further emphasizes the need for this project.
  • Ongole Airport: The government has earmarked 657 acres and is preparing to conduct detailed studies.
  • Nagarjunasagar Airport: Planned on 1,670 acres in the Palnadu district, it is likely to boost the area.
  • Tadepalligudem Airport: The identified land area covers 1,123 acres, placing the project on an industrial and commercial platform.
  • Tuni-Annavaram Airport: The project includes 757 acres of land that will support industries located in the adjacent areas as well as a new steel plant coming up in the Anakapalle district.
  • Sri City Airstrip: There is a plan for an airstrip and increasing connectivity for the area.

The government also has plans for an aviation university and a training center considering that the aviation industry is in dire need of skilled professionals. Since it is sure to increase in the future, parking facilities are planned.

Kuppam Airport in Two Phases

The Chief Minister presented the plans for the Kuppam Airport, which will be developed in two phases.

  • Phase 1: 683 acres are identified.
  • Phase 2: 567 more acres will be used.

Feasibility studies have been conducted, and necessary No Objection Certificates (NOCs) are being sought from the Indian Air Force (IAF), Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), and Bangalore International Airport authorities since these facilities are close to the area.

Revival of Previously Proposed Projects

Chandrababu Naidu criticized the current YSRCP government for neglecting airport projects proposed during the previous TDP government. He emphasized the coalition government’s commitment to reviving these projects and bringing them to fruition.

Gannavaram Airport: New Terminal Design

The Chief Minister also approved plans for a new terminal building at Gannavaram Airport.

  • The design will draw inspiration from Kuchipudi dance and the Amaravati stupa.
  • The expansion work of the airport and the terminal construction are said to be completed in six months from now.

Apart from this, he reviewed the development of Bhogapuram Airport to ensure on-time completion of this crucial infrastructural project.
