HMPV Cases in India and China

Whereas Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) cases have alarmed the people of China, similar incidents have been witnessed in India too. As of now, ICMR officials say two confirmed cases have surfaced in Karnataka in the city of Bengaluru and in children who are 3 years and 8 months of age. Suspected case of HMPV reported in a child in Ahmedabad in Gujarat too is being treated in a hospital with symptoms akin to HMPV.

" These cases have been detected as part of the routine respiratory disease surveillance done by ICMR all over the country, " the Union Health Ministry said. It also said that HMPV is being transmitted around the world and even in India and added that no panic was warranted at the moment. The first child was just three months old, living in India and had recovered and discharged while the other one was under treatment. Importantly, neither family of the affected children had traveled to countries currently reporting HMPV outbreaks, raising questions about the local origin of these infections.

Symptoms and Risks of HMPV

Medical experts report that HMPV symptoms closely resemble those of common flu and other respiratory infections. Symptoms include:

  • Cough
  • Fever
  • Nasal congestion
  • Difficulty breathing

In severe conditions and especially in those with high viral loads, the condition can lead to bronchitis and pneumonia. HMPV has an incubation period of usually three to six days. According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more severe illness occurs in certain segments of society such as children, the elderly, and other immunocompromised persons.

India's Preparedness and Monitoring Efforts

India has taken all precautions due to reports of the outbreak of diseases in China. These diseases have included HMPV, influenza, and even RSV. The Directorate General of Health Services recently called a JMG meeting and reviewed the issue. According to experts, there is an occurrence of these viruses in China owing to seasonal alterations during the winter season. But they claimed the risk to be under control.

As a preventive measure, India is already conducting tests for respiratory diseases, such as RSV and HMPV, in several places. The Health Ministry has assured that the country is prepared to face any sudden surge in cases of respiratory diseases.

Key Points

  • HMPV has been confirmed in Karnataka, while there is a suspected case in Gujarat.
  • The symptoms are similar to flu-like illnesses, and vulnerable groups are more susceptible.
  • India is actively monitoring and testing for respiratory diseases, including HMPV.
  • Experts note that there is no cause for alarm at this point.
