The Telangana government has also extended the term of the one-member commission led by retired High Court judge Justice Dr. Shamim Akhtar. The commission was initially formed to conduct a thorough study of Scheduled Caste (SC) classification in the state.
Commission's Initial Timeline and Extension
Justice Shamim Akhtar took over the charge as the sole member of the commission on November 11. The government had initially asked the commission to complete the study and submit a report within 60 days. Since this period fell on January 10, the time was extended from January 11 to February 10.
Report Submission and Future Extension
The commission has only submitted its report, calling for an urgent SC classification through legislation. The issue is contentious, however, with many protesting and calling for a rethink on the process of classification. As a reaction to these protests, the state government has come out with fresh orders, again pushing the commission's deadline to March 10.
