Gyanesh Kumar was on the shortlist for the post to become India's new Chief Election Commissioner (CEC). The appointment was under fire with Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi lashing out at the decision-making process of the Lok Sabha. Rahul Gandhi deplored the timing of the decision, particularly when the case is to come up for hearing in the Supreme Court.
Rahul Gandhi's Strong Opposition
Rahul Gandhi was upset; he tweeted on X and wrote that an objection report was registered with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah. He said that the independent Election Commission needs to be kept out of the reach of the executive, and the process of choosing the Chief Election Commissioner has to be clear and fair.
He blamed the Modi government for defying the Supreme Court when it announced the new CEC's appointment at midnight, which was meant to create even greater public distrust of India's electoral process. Gandhi said that the Supreme Court would be hearing a petition against the appointment within 48 hours and referred to the government action as "wrong."
CEC Selection Process and Supreme Court Review
Gyanesh Kumar has been made CEC, and Vivek Joshi has been made Election Commissioner. They were made so by a three-member panel led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and consisting of Home Minister Amit Shah and Opposition Leader Rahul Gandhi. They were then sent to President Droupadi Murmu, who cleared them.
The Supreme Court will hold a hearing on a petition against the selection process of the new law on the 19th of this month. Rahul Gandhi had proposed putting the appointment on hold until the hearing in the Supreme Court.
In the midst of the prevailing controversy, the court hearing to be held soon will be the deciding factor on whether the appointment of the CEC was lawful or not.
