'A Minecraft Movie' is an upcoming fantasy comedy adventure film scheduled to be written by Chris Bowman, Hubbel Palmer, Neil Widener, Gavin James, and Chris Galletta from a story told by Allison Schroeder, Bowman, and Palmer. It will be directed by Jared Hess, based on Mojang Studios's 2011 video game Minecraft. Jason Momoa, Jack Black, Danielle Brooks, Emma Myers, Sebastian Hansen, and Jennifer Coolidge are playing the starring role in this upcoming film. In the movie, four outcasts are sucked through a portal into a world that exists in cubes and flourishes on imagination, having no option but to learn the world while going on a quest with a master crafter named Steve.
February 2014 saw plans for a Minecraft movie adaptation when creator Markus Persson announced that Mojang was negotiating with Warner Bros. Images to progress the project, with Roy Lee and Jill Messick producing. Throughout development, directors Shawn Levy, Rob McElhenney, and Peter Sollett were originally set to direct, with writers Kieran and Michele Mulroney, Jason Fuchs, Aaron and Adam Nee, and Allison Schroeder being attached. Legendary Entertainment came aboard in April 2022, with Hess brought in as new director and Momoa being negotiated to star. Additional casting occurred from May 2023 to January 2024. Principal photography commenced later that month in New Zealand and wrapped up in mid-April 2024.
A Minecraft Movie is to be theatrically released in the United States on April 4, 2025.
