Tibetan Buddhist spiritual leader Dalai Lama has stated that his successor would be born outside China. The news comes in his latest book, Voice for the Voiceless. The Dalai Lama has been engaged in a long-standing struggle with China over the control of Tibet for almost six decades. In the book, he laid stress on making sure that the legacy of the Dalai Lama lives on after his death. The book, previewed by an English news agency, is to be launched today.
Successor's Birth Outside China
Earlier, the Dalai Lama had also revealed his fear regarding the possible death of his dynasty. Nevertheless, in his latest book, he confirmed that he would be born again outside of China. According to him, this birth would possibly take place outside Tibet but within India.
"Rebirth will ensure the continuation of the work of the ancestors. The next Dalai Lama will be born in a free world outside China, guaranteeing his role as a voice of universal compassion," he said.
Dalai Lama's Historical Stance
Tenzin Gyatso, the 14th Dalai Lama, fled Tibet at the age of 23 and sought refuge in India. Since then, he has consistently opposed China’s occupation of Tibet. He received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1989 for his dedication to preserving the Tibetan cause.
The Dalai Lama also clarified that he would not acknowledge any successor declared by China, emphasizing that such an individual would lack legitimacy.
Choosing a Successor in India
Now living in Dharamsala, India, the Dalai Lama has indicated that his successor will be chosen there. This will guarantee that the process is free from China's influence.
In Tibetan Buddhism, the Panchen Lama is an important figure who comes only after the Dalai Lama. Though China made a boy the Panchen Lama, Tibetans opposed the decision as it had been made without consulting the Dalai Lama. Consequently, there is increasing interest in the Dalai Lama's successor.
