Trump's Comments on Working with Kim Jong Un
Donald Trump, the former President of the United States, recently made a statement about his relationship with North Korea's leader Kim Jong Un. While meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, Trump responded to a question from a reporter about possible attempts to rebuild relations with Kim.
Trump said that he had a good relationship with Kim Jong Un and also said, "Let's see what happens." Trump recognized the nuclear status of Kim, mentioning the nuclear status of Russia and China as well.
Trump's opinions regarding nuclear weapons
Trump stressed the need to decrease the world's nuclear arsenal. He said instead of concentrating on how many weapons each nation has, it is important that other nations also have them. He pointed out that Kim has a large nuclear arsenal and added India and Pakistan as other nuclear nations.
Earlier Tensions Between Trump and Kim
Under Trump's presidency, North Korea-U.S. relations were strained. The two nations' leaders met in Vietnam in 2019 but failed to negotiate after North Korea declined to give up its nuclear program. Relations between the U.S. and North Korea worsened further after the election of President Joe Biden.
North Korea's Current Position and Regional Tensions
Recently, Kim Jong Un has taken a tougher line against diplomatic talks with Trump. He made the announcement to end personal diplomatic attempts at engaging with the former U.S. president.
Rancor on the Korean Peninsula escalates because of combined South Korea-U.S. military exercises and North Korea's missile launches. The Kim administration perceives such exercises as in preparation for attacking them. A recent arrival in the South Korean port city of Busan by a U.S. aircraft carrier further ratcheted up tension, and for this reason, Kim's sister, Kim Yo Jong, told the U.S. not to engage in acts of provocation.
