US President Donald Trump has confirmed that no residents are to be expelled in his new redevelopment plan for Gaza. Trump made the statement before meeting with Irish Prime Minister Michael Martin on Wednesday.
At a joint press conference with Martin, Trump made this same point. He also mentioned US Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, stating Schumer had changed his position, adding, "Schumer was a Jew before, but now he's a Palestinian."
Martin countered by pointing to the need for greater humanitarian assistance to Gaza, demanding a ceasefire, and for the release of Hamas detainees.
Tensions Between Israel and Ireland
Israel-Ireland relations have continued to be tense in the wake of the persisting Gaza crisis. In December last year, the embassy of Tel Aviv was closed in Ireland after the Irish government showed support for South Africa's charge of genocide leveled against Israel at the International Court of Justice.
Trump's Gaza Development Proposal
Trump has recently threatened to annex Gaza. In a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Trump suggested Palestinians resettle elsewhere in the Middle East while Gaza was redeveloped. He even released an AI-created video selling his idea.
Global Response to Trump's Proposal
Hamas categorically rejected Trump's proposal, stating that Gaza is an integral part of Palestine. Also, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) convened a session in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, where member states united to reject Trump's plan. The OIC supported Egypt's alternative plan for rebuilding Gaza.
